Beaver Island

Inland Seas Kayaking

Where is Beaver Island?
Beaver Island is the central Island of a 7-island archipelago located 30 miles in Lake Michigan north of Traverse City.

Beaver Island is the largest inhabited island in Lake Michigan. It is surrounded by several smaller islands and the waters are pristine. The lake is much warmer than Lake Superior and it is an ideal location for kayaking. Escaping the crowds is one very good reason to plan a trip to Beaver Island - peace and solitude is another.

How to Get to Beaver Island
In the summer, spring, and fall, ferries run daily from Charlevoix to Beaver Island. Take a look at the Beaver Island Boat Company's Web Site for information, rates, and a schedule, or call the Boat Company at 1-888-446-4095. The ferry trip takes two hours and it's a great way to reach Beaver Island.

The Island also has two air services now.

Island Airways provides several flights per day to and from Beaver Island, year round. The airplane trip allows you to reach the Island in 15 minutes and on a clear day offers some great aerial views. Take a look at the Island Airways Web Site for more information and rates or call them at 1-800-524-6895.

Fresh Air Aviation now provides air service to the Township Airport on the west side and pride themselves on their extremely friendly service. Call 1-888-359-7448, or book your flight online on the Fresh Air Aviation Web Site.

Finally, you can reach the Island by private boat or plane. The Island has two airports: the Township Airport and Welke Airport. Beaver Island also has the Township Yacht Dock and the Beaver Island Marina located right next to the home base of the Inland Seas School of Kayaking.

Where to Stay on Beaver Island
Many people enjoy camping on Beaver Island. There are also a number small motels and three B & B's, which we have listed on our Beaver Island Lodging and Camping Links page.
